The same 300GB 15K SAS drive — so why will the VMAX not accept it?

This is the trap the buying side falls into most often, and it is fallen into with complete confidence.

The array reports a failed drive. Operations writes down the specification: 2.5-inch, SAS, 300GB, 15K RPM. They take those parameters out for quotes, find a generic enterprise drive online for a fraction of the price, and ask the obvious question: same specification — why pay several times more for the array vendor’s part?

They buy it, insert it, and the array refuses it.


The difference is not the specification. The drive itself has been changed.

The drives used in EMC-class mid-range and high-end arrays are not generic drives with a badge on them. There are at least two layers of difference.

Layer one: sector format.

A generic drive stores 512 bytes of data per sector. The drives these arrays use are formatted to a larger sector size, and the extra bytes carry data-integrity protection information — every block written from the host can be verified at each hop along the way to check it has not been corrupted.

That is part of the end-to-end data protection scheme. The cost is that a drive with a different sector format is simply not accepted. This is not a software lock; the physical format does not match.

Layer two: firmware.

The drive runs vendor-specific firmware containing error-handling logic, timeout behaviour and background scrubbing policy tuned for that array. The same drive model from the same manufacturer ships with one firmware for EMC and a different one for HPE.

The array checks the drive firmware level. If it does not match, at best the drive is rejected; at worst it is accepted and then throws errors in the background.


So what you specify when buying is not the spec — it is the part number

005050266 and 005052957 both look like ordinary enterprise SAS drives on paper. What they actually point to is a drive already formatted and flashed to EMC’s requirements, ready to go into that particular array.

The price difference is not buying hardware. It is buying “it works when you plug it in”.

Specifics worth confirming:

  • Is it for the right machine? VMAX drives and Unity drives are not interchangeable, even both being EMC.
  • Firmware level. Where the array’s own microcode is older, a newer batch of drives may need firmware downgraded or upgraded before it can join.
  • Same batch? Mixing batches inside one RAID group can affect rebuild time and stability.
  • Is the caddy included? Some channels ship bare drives with no carrier, and it will not physically mount.

A cheap way to judge a supplier

Ask one question: “What sector format is this part number, and what firmware level?”

A supplier who can answer is actually in this business. One who says “it’s just a normal SAS drive” does not know what he is selling.

The question costs nothing and saves a wasted trip to the data hall.
